'tis the season...

It's been a while since we last blogged.. The weather in Melbourne is warming up and wedding season is upon us. Since our last blog, my brother and my now sister-in-law tied the knot, and if that wasn't exciting enough for one little family, my sister and her fiancé also got engaged! So love is truly in the air here in Cake Me! land.

Those of you who have been following us over the years would know that we take all of our cakes very seriously. Especially wedding cakes. Each wedding cake is unique and created with the bride and groom, for the bride and groom. Although each cake is personalised and unique, from strikingly bold to subtle, detailed fondant-finishes to rustic naked cakes, our signature high tiers consistently make each and every wedding cake that we have created, grand and elegant in its own way.

The last three wedding cakes we have created celebrated three wonderful couples and their three very different weddings.  These three cakes showcase how dissimilar wedding cakes can be.

Farzeen and Matt's wedding was held at the very glamorous venue, The Deck, Prince Hotel in St Kilda. Their gorgeous cake with intricate fondant cascading petals complimented the venue's window backdrop.

Mary and Dat's wedding held at The Park in Albert Park had a very modern retro feel, with the extravagant chandeliers contrasting the jet black walls and the gorgeous windows looking out to the iconic Albert Park lake. We used contrasting textures to highlight the tiers, and gold lustre to compliment the bride's subtle gold theme.

The simplicity of the buttercream together with the smooth gold lustre finish, complimented Mary and Dat's subtle gold theme.

Finally our most recent cake is Joy and Warren's semi naked cake for their wedding at Stones of the Yarra Valley. The bride chose the naked look for the rustic and vintage theme, but semi-naked to keep the cake elegant and structured. Each piece of fruit on the cake were individually hand selected. Gorgeous blooms adorned the cake to highlight the natural beauty of the venue, with the spectacular vineyards and rolling hills sitting modestly in the background behind the cake.

Wedding cakes have come a long way over the years from the traditional fruit cake covered with marzipan, to the infinite options offered to the bride and groom today. Wedding cakes today are exciting. They make a gorgeous centrepiece for the wedding venue and are no longer one-size-fit-all. Wedding cakes can truly reflect the taste of the bridal couple and the theme of the wedding, sometimes incorporating bold colours, some more simple and yet classy, others opting for heavy detailing, stenciling, and fondant-finishing, cakes with softer finishes of buttercream, tiers of hand painted lustre for high-gloss shine, to the raw elegance and simplicity of fresh fruit and flowers.

The blanketed crusader

This cake is one that is extremely close to my heart.

I remember taking the bus home one winter's evening after uni. It was bucketing down, very cold and very dark. Kind of scenario where you'd prefer to just stay on the bus and not get off, even though you couldn't wait to get home. But there, waiting in the rain by the unlit bus stop was my brother, on his little bicycle, with an umbrella. He's always been like that.

Fourteen years later, my brother Warren founded the charity organisation 300 Blankets, to keep those who are less fortunate in our community warm. Waz works a full time job in Merchandising at the Myer Headquarters, but after work and on weekends, he directs a team of over 70 volunteers to provide warmth to the homeless. 300 Blankets raises awareness, funds, buys, collects and distributes blankets to the homeless. His work isn't just about providing tangible materials, it is also about providing warmth through friendship. Every Wednesday night, rain, hail or shine, Christmas Day, his birthday or just any regular Wednesday, you would find Waz out with the Vinnies Soup Van distributing food, a hot drink, blankets and friendship to those who need it most.

The stories and experiences that Waz shares are moving, heart wrenching and more often than not, puts a lump in your throat or fills your eyes up with tears. Listening to my brother speak at a recent event and looking around at an audience of over a hundred people, you can see how his work and anecdotes pulls at people's heartstrings.

So that's Waz as a brother and as a member of the community. What makes Waz extra special is that he is your normal, average person. He loves his fiancee, his family and his close group of friends.  Waz is our everyday superhero.  He's a man with many hats (or lego heads, as this cake suggests).

The other Waz we know and love is "Uncle Wazzie" as he is affectionately called by his niece and nephew.  Waz is a big kid at heart, an awesome uncle, and our kids adore him. He loves toys and for years, worked in the toy department at Myer, and then later, in the Buying Office for Toys.  Waz has especially loved Lego and made sure he rubbed his passion for these coloured bricks on to his niece and nephew.  Another of Waz's childhood loves is Raphael, the red teenage mutant ninja turtle.

Warren. Our brother, friend and uncle. Hero in a half shell.  Friendly neigbhourhood spider.  We couldn't be more prouder of you, Waz. Happy 30th birthday to our Blanketed Crusader.
